Spain Sink France on Bastille Day to Reach World Cup Final
BY KUNLE SOLAJA.
Spain moved within one victory of a second FIFA World Cup title after defeating France 2-0 in the semi-finals on Tuesday, producing a composed and disciplined performance to book their place in Sunday’s final.
The victory came exactly two years after Spain’s triumph at UEFA Euro 2022 and keeps alive their dream of repeating the historic feat they achieved in 2010 when they won the World Cup as reigning European champions.
For France, however, the defeat carried an added layer of disappointment as it came on Bastille Day, the country’s national holiday commemorating the French Revolution of 1789 and the birth of the modern French Republic.

They were aiming to become the next country after Brazil to reach the World Cup final match on three consecutive editions.
After an evenly contested opening, Spain gradually asserted control through their trademark possession-based approach, dictating the tempo and limiting France’s attacking opportunities.
The breakthrough arrived in the 22nd minute when teenage sensation Lamine Yamal was brought down inside the penalty area by Lucas Digne. Mikel Oyarzabal calmly converted the resulting spot-kick, sending goalkeeper Mike Maignan the wrong way to give Spain a deserved lead.
France struggled to create clear-cut chances against a well-organised Spanish side that maintained control of possession and territory for much of the encounter.
Spain effectively sealed victory in the 58th minute through Pedro Porro. The defender exchanged a clever one-two with Dani Olmo before racing through on goal and finishing confidently past Maignan to double his side’s advantage.
The second goal further tightened Spain’s grip on the match, with France unable to find a way back despite their efforts to increase the pressure in the closing stages.
The win sends Spain into their first World Cup final since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010. They will now face either England or Argentina in Sunday’s showpiece at New York/New Jersey Stadium as they seek to become world champions for the second time.
Having already conquered Europe, Spain are now just one match away from completing another remarkable double and etching their name once more into football history.

BET9JA FACT FILE: Mbappé and Yamal – The Men Who Haunt Their Rivals

As France and Spain prepare for another high-stakes showdown, two names stand out for their decisive impact in recent meetings between the European giants: Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal.
Mbappé’s Final Word
France captain Kylian Mbappé was the match-winner the last time his country defeated Spain in a major final. In the 2020/21 UEFA Nations League final in Milan, Spain struck first through Mikel Oyarzabal before Karim Benzema levelled matters. Mbappé then delivered the decisive goal as France secured a 2-1 victory and lifted the trophy.
That remains France’s most notable recent success against Spain, who have since gained the upper hand in the rivalry.
Yamal’s Semi-Final Speciality
If Mbappé has been France’s hero against Spain, teenage sensation Lamine Yamal has become Les Bleus’ tormentor.
Remarkably, three of Yamal’s seven international goals for Spain have come against France, and all of them have been scored in semi-final matches.
His first strike came in Spain’s 2-1 victory over France in the UEFA EURO 2024 semi-finals, a goal that announced his arrival on the biggest stage.
He followed that up with an even more devastating display in the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League semi-finals, scoring twice as Spain edged France 5-4 in a thrilling encounter.
By The Numbers
- 3 – Goals scored by Lamine Yamal against France.
- 7 – Total international goals scored by Yamal for Spain.
- 43% – Percentage of Yamal’s Spain goals scored against France.
- 2 – Consecutive victories for Spain over France in recent meetings.
- 1 – Nations League final won by France over Spain, courtesy of Mbappé’s winner in 2021.
The Key Battle
As the World Cup semi-final approaches, France will once again look to Mbappé for inspiration, while Spain will hope Yamal can continue his remarkable habit of producing his best against Les Bleus.
History suggests that when these two footballing powers meet, one of these stars usually has the final say.

Bastille Day Brings Extra Meaning to Spain-France World Cup Semi-final

BY KUNLE SOLAJA.
Today, 14 July, is the national day for France. So, when France and Spain walk onto the pitch for Tuesday’s FIFA World Cup semi-final, they will be contesting more than just a place in the final of football’s greatest tournament.
The match carries a unique historical and emotional significance as it falls on July 14, France’s National Day, better known around the world as Bastille Day.
For the French, the date commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789, a defining moment of the French Revolution and a symbol of national unity, freedom and pride. Across France, millions will celebrate with military parades, fireworks and public festivities, but this year many eyes will also be fixed on Atlanta, where Didier Deschamps’ side will attempt to mark the occasion with a victory that would send them into a second consecutive World Cup final.
The coincidence has added an extra layer of symbolism to a semi-final already rich in footballing significance.
“Playing on July 14 gives the occasion a special resonance for France,” noted several French media outlets ahead of the encounter. “A place in the World Cup final would be the perfect national-day gift.”
European Giants Renew Rivalry
The match pits together two of Europe’s most successful football nations and two teams that have impressed throughout the expanded 48-team tournament.
France arrive in the semi-finals after defeating Sweden, Paraguay and Morocco, with captain Kylian Mbappé continuing his prolific World Cup form. The French forward scored against Morocco in the quarter-finals to move to eight goals in the tournament and reinforce his status as one of the leading contenders for the Golden Boot.
Spain, meanwhile, have been one of the most consistent teams in North America. Before conceding against Belgium in the quarter-finals, La Roja had not allowed a goal throughout the competition and had set a World Cup record of 609 consecutive minutes without conceding.
Victories over Austria, Portugal and Belgium have underlined Spain’s credentials as serious title contenders.
Echoes of Nations League Final
The semi-final also revives a modern rivalry that has grown increasingly competitive over the last decade.
Spain and France have met in major competitions on several notable occasions, including the UEFA Nations League final in 2021, won by France, and the UEFA Euro 2024 semi-final, won by Spain.
Tuesday’s contest therefore represents another chapter in a rivalry that has frequently shaped the balance of power in European football.
A Historic Date for France
French football has experienced mixed fortunes on Bastille Day.
The national team has rarely played competitive matches on July 14 because major tournaments are often concluded by then. That rarity makes this World Cup semi-final even more notable.
For France, the opportunity is clear: win on the nation’s most celebrated day and move within one victory of a third World Cup title.
For Spain, however, there is the prospect of spoiling the French party.
Luis de la Fuente’s side will have little interest in the symbolism surrounding the date. Their objective is to reach a first World Cup final since their triumphant campaign in South Africa in 2010.
More Than a Semi-final
The stakes could hardly be higher.
The winner will advance to the World Cup final on July 19, while the loser will have to settle for the third-place play-off.
Yet beyond the football, the timing of the match ensures it will occupy a special place in French sporting history. A World Cup semi-final on Bastille Day combines two of the country’s most powerful sources of national identity: its revolutionary heritage and its passion for football.
Should France prevail, July 14, 2026, could become remembered not only for the celebrations on the streets of Paris but also for a famous night in Atlanta that brought Les Bleus to the brink of another world title.

World Cup Semi-Final: France Seek to Halt Spain’s Historic Run

France and Spain will renew one of international football’s most compelling rivalries on Tuesday when they clash in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026, with a place in the final at stake.
While Spain head into the encounter with the psychological advantage of recent results, France arrive buoyed by an impressive World Cup record and a winning streak that underlines their status as one of the tournament favourites.
Spain have dominated recent meetings between the European heavyweights, winning seven of their last 10 encounters while losing only twice. La Roja have also emerged victorious in the last two meetings, edging France 2-1 in the UEFA EURO 2024 semi-finals before prevailing in a thrilling 5-4 contest in the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League semi-finals.
Those results have strengthened Spain’s belief that they possess the formula to overcome Didier Deschamps’ side once again. The Spaniards have also been remarkably consistent over the past three years, currently riding the longest unbeaten streak in their history. Excluding penalty shoot-out defeats, Spain have gone 36 matches without tasting defeat, a run that highlights their resurgence as a dominant force in world football.
France, however, will draw confidence from their formidable pedigree on the biggest stage. Les Bleus have won 17 of their last 20 FIFA World Cup matches, losing only once during that span while drawing twice. Their performances in North America have further reinforced their reputation as tournament specialists.
The 2018 world champions have won all six of their matches at the 2026 tournament, matching the longest winning sequence they achieved across the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. Led by captain Kylian Mbappé, France have combined attacking flair with defensive solidity, navigating a difficult route to the last four.
