Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has attributed his side’s FIFA World Cup exit to a lack of experience and composure under pressure following their 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32.

The Black Stars saw their World Cup campaign come to an end after Jhon Arias struck in the 14th minute to hand Colombia victory and a place in the Round of 16.

Speaking after the match, Queiroz said the youthful Ghanaian side struggled to cope with the intensity of the occasion, particularly after being forced into an early defensive reshuffle when right-back Marvin Senaya was injured and replaced by Alidu Seidu.

“I felt really quickly that some of the Ghanaian players were fearful. They were not cool, calm and collected when the pressure hit,” the Portuguese coach said.

The 73-year-old stressed that while Ghana’s young squad possesses promise and enthusiasm, it still lacks the maturity required to compete consistently at the highest level.

“It’s a very young team. We need more experience; we need time for some players to win what we call maturity,” Queiroz explained.

“When you play this kind of competition at this level, you cannot only count on the enthusiasm of the youths.”

The former international coach admitted Colombia deserved their victory, noting that the early goal came at a difficult moment for Ghana as the team was still adjusting to the enforced substitution.

“The goal came too early for us. It took some time for us to adjust and recover from that substitution, and the goal came at the moment we were trying to resettle our team,” he said.

Despite improving after the break and showing greater attacking intent, Ghana were unable to find an equaliser against a disciplined Colombian side.

Queiroz acknowledged that his team performed better in the second half but conceded they never truly seized control of the contest.

“The second half was better from our side, but we were never really in command of the game,” he noted.

The defeat ends Ghana’s World Cup journey at the Round of 32 stage, bringing down the curtain on a campaign that showcased the potential of a new generation of Black Stars players but also highlighted the challenges of competing against more seasoned opponents on football’s biggest stage.

For Colombia, the victory keeps their World Cup dream alive as they advance to the Round of 16, while Ghana will leave the tournament with valuable experience that Queiroz believes will be crucial for the team’s future development.

As football fans around the world focus on the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stages, the FIFA Fan Festival will offer a spectacular blend of football, music and culture on Friday, July 4, with special events planned across Miami, Mexico City and Dallas.

The biggest celebration is set for Miami, where the FIFA Fan Festival at Bayfront Park will host a day-long programme marking 250 years of American independence.

Running from noon until midnight, the free event will combine live World Cup match screenings with a packed entertainment schedule featuring internationally renowned performers. Music lovers will be treated to appearances by Jamaican reggae icon Shaggy, Cuban-American music legend Willy Chirino, country performer Orlando Mendez, R&B group 112, rock band The Fray, and the popular duo of Ashanti and Ja Rule.

The festivities will also include a drone show and a midnight fireworks display, providing a fitting finale to a day celebrating both football and a landmark moment in American history.

In Mexico City, fans attending the FIFA Fan Festival will be entertained by Mexican singer, actor and voice artist Héctor Ortiz, who is scheduled to perform at 5:00 p.m.

Ortiz, known for his extensive work in musical theatre and film dubbing, will present a special tribute show honouring legendary music icons Elvis Presley and Jim Morrison. Widely regarded as one of independent music’s most respected acts, the band is expected to deliver its trademark blend of vivid storytelling, energetic fiddle-driven melodies and fan-favourite Red Dirt country anthems, offering a distinctly American soundtrack to Independence Day celebrations.

The entertainment programme forms part of FIFA’s efforts to make the FIFA Fan Festival a major attraction beyond the matches themselves, creating a unique atmosphere where football supporters can experience local culture, music and festivities while following the action from the world’s biggest sporting event.

With knockout football drama on the screens and world-class entertainment on stage, fans across North America are set for a memorable Fourth of July celebration at the FIFA Fan Festival.

Morocco will seek to reinforce their status as Africa’s leading force on the global stage when they face co-hosts Canada in a high-stakes FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash.

The Atlas Lions enter the encounter carrying not only the hopes of Moroccan supporters but also much of Africa’s expectations following another impressive World Cup campaign.

Walid Regragui’s side arrive in the knockout stage with confidence soaring after overcoming the Netherlands in a dramatic penalty shootout in the Round of 32. The victory added another memorable chapter to Morocco’s growing World Cup legacy and kept alive hopes of an even deeper run than their historic achievements in recent tournaments.

Morocco’s attacking consistency has been one of the hallmarks of their success. The Atlas Lions have scored in each of their last five World Cup matches, setting a new national record and underlining their ability to compete with the world’s elite.

That scoring streak will be put to the test against a Canadian side enjoying its own historic moment. The co-hosts have found the net in six successive World Cup matches, the longest such run in their history, as they continue to benefit from strong home support and growing confidence.

Yet Morocco will take encouragement from their experience on football’s biggest stage. Having become the benchmark for African success at recent World Cups, the North Africans have repeatedly shown their ability to thrive under pressure and deliver on the grandest occasions.

The clash promises to be a fascinating battle between Morocco’s tournament-tested resilience and Canada’s youthful ambition.

For the Atlas Lions, victory would secure a place in the quarter-finals and further cement their reputation as one of the world’s emerging football powers. It would also strengthen Morocco’s position as Africa’s standard-bearers at the tournament and bring them another step closer to making history once again.

Canada, meanwhile, will be determined to continue their dream run in front of their home fans, setting the stage for what could be one of the most captivating matches of the Round of 16.

With both teams arriving in form and carrying record-scoring streaks, the encounter is expected to provide the kind of drama and excitement that has become synonymous with Morocco’s recent World Cup adventures.

France Seek To Extend Dominance As Resilient Paraguay Stand In Their Way

BY KUNLE SOLAJA,

France will look to continue their impressive FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign when they face Paraguay in a Round of 16 clash on Friday, but history suggests the South Americans should not be underestimated.

The two nations share a World Cup rivalry that dates back nearly seven decades, with their most memorable encounter producing one of the tournament’s greatest goal-fests.

In the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, France defeated Paraguay 7-3 in a group-stage thriller inspired by a hat-trick from legendary striker Just Fontaine. The match remains the highest-scoring World Cup game involving either nation and is still celebrated as one of the most entertaining contests in tournament history.

While much has changed since that remarkable encounter, France enter the match as favourites after cruising into the knockout rounds and dispatching Sweden 3-0 in the Round of 32.

Led by a blend of established stars and emerging talents, the French have shown the attacking quality that has made them one of the strongest contenders for the title. Their victory over Sweden extended their impressive unbeaten run and reinforced their status among the tournament favourites.

Paraguay, however, have already demonstrated their ability to frustrate more fancied opponents. The South Americans stunned Germany in the Round of 32, prevailing in a penalty shootout after a hard-fought draw, a result that underlined their resilience and defensive organisation.

With confidence high after eliminating one of Europe’s traditional powers, Paraguay will believe they can spring another surprise against the 2018 world champions.

For France, the challenge will be to break down a disciplined Paraguayan side determined to extend its unexpected run. For Paraguay, the objective is simple: continue rewriting the script and reach the quarter-finals for the first time in their history.

The winners will move one step closer to the World Cup trophy, but only one can keep their dream alive.
