SUPER EAGLES COULD DRAW LESSONS FROM PREVIOUS ‘DAVID VERSUS GOLIATH’ MATCHES
BY KUNLE SOLAJA.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles would have drawn great lessons from the way lesser-rated Zimbabwe nearly frustrate Egypt in the opening match as they file out on Saturday evening to face debutants, Burundi in the opening match of Group B of the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Nigerians are playing their first Africa Cup of Nations’ match since their victory in South Africa six years ago.
On paper and in relative strength, the Burundians are the obvious underdogs.
But football history is replete with tales of minnows upstaging better-rated teams. Easily recalled is how Malawi nearly upstaged Nigeria at the 1984 edition in Bouake, Cote d’Ivoire.
In the preceding match, Nigeria had shocked defending champions, Ghana with a 2-1 defeat. With that result, the outcome of their next match with Malawi was considered a foregone conclusion.
It was not to be. Malawi took a surprise 2-0 lead before Nigeria fought back through substitute player, Clement Temile to get a 2-2 draw. In similar vein, a lower rated Uganda shocked a star-studded Nigerian side, 2-1 at the 1978 edition in Ghana. These are lessons of history to make the Super Eagles avoid banana skin in the match with Burundi who could put up a frustrating tactics.
In qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time, Burundi came as runners-up and featured without losing a match. They won three of their six qualifying matches and drew the rest.
Coming up against a side making their first appearance, Nigeria are seen as favorites heading into the tie and will be under pressure to
They promise to be no pushovers and have vowed to put their best performance.
Building up to AFCON, Burundi played two friendly matches, drawing 1-1 with Algeria in their first game in Doha, Qatar before losing 2-1 to Tunisia in Rades courtesy of a late goal by Naim Sliti.
These are yet further indications that Burundi will not be an easy match.
