While all four teams of Sudan, for instance all scaled the first round of their respective CAF inter clubs competition, the two out of the four from Nigeria that managed to scale through did so by the thickness of their skins.

It was more of escape for both Enyimba in the CAF Champions League and Rivers United in the Confederation Cup.

Enyimba, 1-0 winners away to Burkina Faso’s Rahimo discovered that the return leg match at home was not a downhill task as they were forced to a 1-1 draw and merely scaled through on a 2-1 aggregate.

Sadly, they ended the match with 10 men as Imo Obot was given the red card at the 90th minute of the match. They will now face El Merriekh of Sudan in the next round.

In the other match in Port Harcourt, Rivers United, 2-1 losers away to Futoro Kings of Equatorial Guinea, needed the lottery of penalty shootout to escape a possible embarrassing elimination.

After first half goals by Kehinde Adedipe and Godwin Aguda, the coast looked clear for Rivers United to flow effortlessly into the second round of the Confederation Cup, but it turned out not to be an easy day.

Pedro Oba Asu put the Equatorial Guineans back into contention as his goal in the second half brought the aggregate scored to 3-3.

With score line remaining at 2-1 and 3-3 on aggregate, the match had to be decided by penalty shootout. Futuro missed all their kicks while Rivers United scored two to escape into the next round.

Nigeria’s sole survivor into the second round of the CAF Champions League, Enugu Rangers have crashed out of the competition. They lost 3-1 to Angola’s Sagrada Esperança  this Sunday in Luanda.

The aggregate scoreline is 3-2 as Rangers last weekend won their home game 1-0. Sagrada Esperança opened the game with offensive and got their first goal barely six minutes into the game when Alexandre Fernando found the back of the net.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 33rd minute through Mussa. But four minutes later, Enugu Rangers reduced the tally to 2-1 to carry an away goal advantage into half time.

Jamie Pimpao got the much needed goal for Angola in the 67th minute to seal the hopes of Rangers.

Sagrada Esperança will now go into next month’s draw for the draw of the group stage.
