Baxter Names ‘Tyson’ Thulani Hlatshwayo as New Bafana Captain
The one-hour telephone discussion that South Africa’s coach, Stuart Baxter had with the coach of BidVest Wits, Gavin Hunt, may have shaped his mind in choosing a captain for the Bafana Bafana side that will meet the Super Eagles in Uyo on Saturday.
Baxter has named Thulani Hlatshwayo named as new Bafana captain. Sports Village Square recalls that Gavin Hunt had told the South African coach that he should pick his defender.
Hear him: Well I think if you’re going to go into a new era, new dawn, new feel, and you want to build your team, Hlatshwayo is the perfect guy to build your team around”.
That is exactly what Baxter has done as his team prepares to face its perennial nemesis, the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
According to arguments in South African football cycle, Thulani Hlatshwayo is the most in-form South African defender this season.
He led his club to lift the domestic league title. He is described as a warrior on the field. He is called ‘Tyson’ in South African football cycle.
The hopes of Libya securing a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations ticket seem to have gone up in smoke. This is the sequel to the 2-1 defeat that Rwanda inflicted on the Benin Republic on Tuesday evening.
With the result, Libya’s position is further cemented at the bottom of the table. Nigeria, even with an outstanding match, still leads with seven points.

It is also a renewal of their hopes of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. But they still have two more games to play.
The German made two changes from the side that started against Benin last week as Samuel Gueulette and Emmanuel Imanishimwe came in for Kevin Muhire and Claude Niyomugabo respectively.
The press release on Tuesday by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) may have lifted a burden off Nigeria as the match with Libya is considered postponed rather than the Super Eagles refusing to play.
The continental body remarked that the matter would be referred to the competent CAF bodies.
