Amapakabo Eyes Miraculous Escape
Enugu Rangers remain the only Nigerian side at the CAF Champions League. But the fate of the team will be decided Sunday afternoon in the decisive return match with Zamalek.
Head Coach, Imama Amapakabo told CAFonline that he believes his side are capable of overturning the 4-1 deficit when they host Egyptian giants, Zamalek.
The Flying Antelopes must score at least three goals past the five-time winners and not concede any, to progress to the lucrative mini-league stage.
Amapakabo is praying that the ‘gods of football’ will be on their side to complete a miraculous comeback, despite admitting it will be a mountain too tall to climb.
“Despite the fact that we lose 4-1 in the first leg does not mean we cannot change the tune of the music here in Nigeria.
“The first leg has come and gone and we have moved on. The important thing is that I have my team intact and I believe we will perform wonders this weekend.
“We know it won’t be an easy match but we are banking on the fact that we want to maintain the jinx we have broken in the league after 32 years. We intend to do the same in the continental club championship because it has been a decade since Rangers the country in the CAF Champions league.
“The truth is that we will put in our best to make we score goals and win the day as well qualify to the group stage, but only if the players will step up their game and make use of their chances once the need arises,” Amapakabo said.
Egypt’s Pyramids claimed a deserved 2-1 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa. This led to a 3-2 aggregate success. They celebrated their first African Champions League title. This triumph occurred following the second leg of this year’s final at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo on Sunday.
The first leg in Pretoria finished 1-1. Fiston Mayele gave Pyramids the lead on 23 minutes. He profited from a Sundowns defensive error. Ahmed Samy doubled the advantage on 56 minutes. He scored with a header from a free-kick.
Sundowns pulled a goal back through Iqraam Rayners with 15 minutes remaining. One more goal would have given them victory in the tie on the away goals rule. However, Pyramids held firm despite heavy pressure from the visitors.
Pyramids are the fourth Egyptian side to lift the Champions League trophy after record 12-time winners Al Ahly, Zamalek, and Ismaily. Meanwhile, 2016 champions Sundowns head to this month’s Club World Cup in the United States on a low note.
