The Governments of Ogun and Lagos States have released a detailed update on the road traffic accident involving world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua and three other passengers along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

The accident, which occurred earlier on Monday, tragically claimed the lives of two passengers. The deceased have been identified as Ayodele Kelvin Olu (36), a Nigerian-British national, and Gami Sina (36), a British citizen.

The British High Commission has formally been notified of the incident and is actively monitoring developments. According to the joint update, officials of the Mission are in direct communication with the hospital and relevant Nigerian authorities. The Deputy High Commissioner also paid a fact-finding visit to the medical facility, where he met with Anthony Joshua and held engagements with government officials.

Families of the deceased have been contacted through the British High Commission, while arrangements are already at an advanced stage to repatriate the bodies to the United Kingdom in line with the wishes of their respective families.

The statement noted that the Governors of Ogun and Lagos States personally took charge of the situation, remaining at the hospital for over seven hours to oversee medical care and coordination. Several key stakeholders were also present to offer professional support, including the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been fully briefed on the incident. The President personally spoke with Anthony Joshua and members of his family by phone, expressing his condolences and sympathies over the tragic loss of lives.

The Ogun and Lagos State Governments reassured the public that Anthony Joshua is receiving the best possible medical care and that his condition continues to be closely monitored by a full medical team.

Authorities said further updates would be provided as necessary on the well-being of the boxing champion and others affected by the accident, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash continue.

The governments of Ogun State and Lagos State have confirmed that British-Nigerian two-time unified world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a road traffic accident on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

In a joint statement issued on Monday, the two state governments said the vehicle conveying Joshua and three others collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the death of two occupants.

The governments expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the incident as tragic and praying for strength for those affected by the loss.

According to the statement, Joshua and another passenger were immediately evacuated to a specialised medical facility in Lagos for treatment. Following comprehensive clinical assessments, medical officials confirmed that both patients are stable and do not require emergency medical intervention.

“A full medical team has been assembled and will continue to monitor them closely,” the statement said, adding that Joshua is conscious and has been in communication with his family.

The Ogun and Lagos State governments said they are closely monitoring the situation to ensure that all affected persons receive the best possible medical care. They also confirmed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident have commenced.

Boxing rival Jake Paul and promoter Eddie Hearn have spoken after British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua was injured in a fatal road crash in Nigeria that claimed two lives.

Paul said he was praying for Joshua and the victims following the accident, which occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu, Ogun State. Reacting on social media platform X, Paul stressed that the tragedy put sporting rivalries into perspective.

“Life is much more important than boxing,” Paul wrote. “I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident.”

Paul had faced Joshua earlier this month in Miami, where the former heavyweight champion stopped him in the sixth round in a bout that attracted global attention.

Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, also confirmed that the boxer survived the crash and had been taken to the hospital. Speaking to Mirror Sport from the Caribbean, where he is currently on holiday, Hearn said Joshua was stable but declined to give further medical details.

“He’s OK and heading to the hospital,” Hearn said, adding that more information would be made available when confirmed.

Joshua was in Nigeria at the time of the crash, spending time in his parents’ homeland. Though born in England and an Olympic gold medallist for Great Britain, he has often spoken about his Nigerian roots and is frequently seen displaying the country’s colours.
