Semilogo Ajayi is suspended as Super Eagles regroup for Gabon clash

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, prolific striker Victor Osimhen, and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali headline Nigeria’s 24-man squad named by head coach Eric Chelle for next week’s 2026 FIFA World Cup African Play-off Tournament in Rabat, Morocco.

Also listed are dependable defenders Bright Osayi-Samuel and Calvin Bassey, alongside midfield stalwarts Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, and Frank Onyeka, as well as attacking wingers Samuel Chukwueze and Ademola Lookman.

Nigeria will face Gabon in the first semi-final at the 22,000-capacity Complexe Sportif Prince Héritier Moulay Al Hassan in Rabat, while Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo square off in the other semi-final at the El-Barid Stadium, which seats 18,000 fans.

Chelle, who is leading Nigeria to his first major tournament since his appointment, has also recalled Maduka Okoye, the Italy-based goalkeeper, and Chidera Ejuke, who plies his trade with Sevilla in Spain. Midfielder Raphael Onyedika and forwards Tolu Arokodare, Jerome Akor Adams, and Olusegun Olakunle also make the roster.

Cape Verde’s dream FIFA World Cup debut gathered further momentum on Sunday as the African newcomers held two-time champions Uruguay to a thrilling 2-2 draw in Group H, earning another valuable point and keeping their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.

The island nation, making its first appearance at the World Cup finals, once again demonstrated remarkable resilience and belief as they matched the South American giants stride for stride in an entertaining encounter.

Having already impressed with a goalless draw against Spain in their opening match, Cape Verde made history in the 21st minute when Kevin Pina scored the country’s first-ever goal at a World Cup finals.

The goal stemmed from a dazzling run by Telmo Arcanjo, who earned a free kick after surging through the Uruguayan defence. From fully 31 metres out, Pina unleashed a powerful low drive that beat the goalkeeper and sparked wild celebrations among Cape Verde’s players and supporters.

The lead, however, lasted only until Uruguay’s experience began to tell.

Maxi Araujo restored parity with a headed finish after reacting quickest to a rebound before turning provider later in the half. Another well-placed header from Araujo found Agustin Canobbio, who made no mistake in putting Uruguay ahead 2-1 before the interval.

Facing their first deficit of the tournament, Cape Verde refused to buckle.

Their determination was rewarded in the second half through substitute Helio Varela, who made an immediate impact after entering the game. Just two minutes after coming on, Varela capitalised on a loose back pass from Mathias Olivera, racing onto the ball, drawing the goalkeeper out of position and calmly slotting into an empty net to level the scores.

The equaliser ensured another memorable chapter in Cape Verde’s historic World Cup adventure and highlighted the growing competitiveness of African football on the global stage.

The draw leaves both Cape Verde and Uruguay on two points, behind Group H leaders Spain, who have four points heading into the final round of matches.

For Cape Verde, the result represents more than just another point. It is further proof that the tournament debutants belong on football’s biggest stage. Holding European powerhouse Spain and now sharing the spoils with Uruguay, one of South America’s most decorated football nations, the Blue Sharks have emerged as one of Africa’s most inspiring stories of the tournament.

With qualification to the knockout phase still within reach, Cape Verde head into their final group match knowing that their remarkable World Cup journey could yet produce another historic milestone.

Uruguay will look to maintain their unbeaten FIFA World Cup record against African opposition when they take on tournament debutants Cabo Verde in a crucial Group H encounter on Sunday.

The two-time world champions face a Cabo Verde side brimming with confidence after the island nation earned a remarkable goalless draw against Spain in their previous outing, one of the biggest results in their football history.

Uruguay have never lost to an African team at the World Cup, recording three victories and two draws in five previous meetings. However, the South Americans know they cannot afford complacency against a Cabo Verde side that has already demonstrated its ability to frustrate established football powers.

For Cabo Verde, the match represents another opportunity to enhance their growing reputation on the global stage. The Blue Sharks impressed observers with their disciplined defensive display against Spain and will be eager to prove that result was no fluke.

Uruguay, meanwhile, will rely on their vast World Cup experience as they seek maximum points and a stronger foothold in the race for a place in the knockout rounds.

With confidence high in both camps, the clash promises to be a fascinating contest between one of football’s traditional giants and one of the tournament’s most inspiring newcomers.

Spain will attempt to strengthen their position in Group H when they face Saudi Arabia in a FIFA World Cup encounter that rekindles memories of their previous meeting two decades ago.

The two nations last met at the World Cup during the 2006 tournament in Germany, when a solitary goal from Juanito secured a 1-0 victory for Spain in Kaiserslautern.

La Roja enter the fixture determined to return to winning ways after being held to a surprise draw by tournament debutants Cabo Verde. The Spanish side will be keen to avoid another setback as the group stage enters a decisive phase.

Saudi Arabia, however, have ambitions of creating history. The Green Falcons are seeking their first World Cup victory against European opposition since their memorable 1-0 triumph over Belgium at the 1994 tournament in the United States.

A positive result would significantly boost Saudi Arabia’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stage while adding another notable chapter to their World Cup story.

With both teams aware of the importance of the fixture, Sunday’s encounter could prove pivotal in shaping the final Group H standings.
