VIDEO: Nigeria’s D’Tigers round off AfroBasket Qualifiers with defeat of Cape Verde
It turned into a 100 per cent performance for Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, D’Tigers as they won all their three Group B matches of the AfroBasket 2025 qualifiers, setting a pace for the men’s football team, Super Eagles who like D’Tigers, have a bad head start in their World Cup qualifying duels.
D’Tigers went into the last qualifying window for the 2025 AfroBasket qualifying series as the bottom-placed team in Group B.
But they turned things around with their opening defeat of hosts, Libya and followed up with that of Uganda.
Initial front-runners, Cape Verde on Sunday evening became their third victim after inflicting a 77-62 defeat on the island nation.
As in the previous matches, the Nigerian team came from behind to achieve success.
They trailed 26-22 in the first quarter. In the second quarter, they had a massive 26-7 win before Cape Verde stepped up their game in the third quarter, winning 21-13.
Nigeria bounced back in the final quarter, winning 16-8 to achieve the aggregate 77-62 win.

On the final day of the AfroBasket 2025 mini tournament in Tripoli, Libya, Nigeria, currently third on the log of Group B may have qualified, even ahead of their last match this Sunday with Cape Verde.
According to FIBA Africa on its website, Cape Verde, Libya, Nigeria, and Uganda are qualified for the final tournament holding in Angola in August.
The team that will finish fourth in this group will qualify as the best-fourth team of the AfroBasket Qualifiers.
The upcoming gamesthis Sunday are: Uganda vs. Libya and Cape Verde versus Nigeria.

Nigeria men’s basketball team, D’Tigers put up a scintillating last-quarter display on Saturday evening to beat Uganda 87-67 at the AfroBasket 2025 qualifying series going on in Tripoli.
After trailing at halftime following 16-12 and 18-16 losses in the first two quarters, the Nigerian side began a fight back in the third quarter which they won 27-25.
At the Grand Hall in Tripoli venue, the comeback achievement was completed in the fourth quarter which Nigeria won massively by 32-8 as the Ugandans crumbled.
Going into the last match on Sunday with Cape Verde, the Saturday defeat of Uganda has renewed the possibility of the hitherto bottom-placed Nigeria to qualify.
At the moment and with the previous matches played before the Tripoli mini-tournament, Nigeria now have seven points, the same as Uganda and Cape Verde.
Cape Verde however still have a game with Libya later in the evening.

Just like the Super Eagles’ likely qualification for the FIFA World Cup has become a cliffhanger, the Nigeria men’s basketball team, D’Tigers are facing a similar situation in their quest to pick a ticket to the AfroBasket holding in August this year in Angola.
Going into the play-off currently holding in Libya, D’Tigers in Group B were bottom-placed in a quartet that includes Libya, Uganda and Cape Verde.
Nigeria’s win on Friday over Libya leaves D’Tigers on five points, one behind Libya and Uganda, who are tied on points. If they lose to Uganda this Saturday evening, they will be out.
