Solskjaer says Besiktas job reminds him of Man United stint
New Besiktas manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Sunday he took the Turkish Super Lig club’s job offer because it reminded him of his last managerial stint at Manchester United.
The 51-year-old Norwegian has agreed to a deal until the end of next season, with an option to extend for another year. It is his first managerial role since being sacked by United in 2021.
Solskjaer took over as Manchester United’s caretaker manager in December 2018, with the team sixth in the standings, replacing Jose Mourinho (now Fenerbahce manager) for the remainder of the season.
The Norwegian earned a three-year deal after a run of 10 wins out of 13 league games. He guided United to third and second-place Premier League finishes and a Europa League final.
However, a poor run of form led to his departure in November 2021 with United in seventh place in the league standings. “I’ve been outside football for a little while, as a boss,” Solskjaer told reporters.
“But I’ve been working in UEFA and I’ve been following football as well as this club… This project seems a little bit like Manchester United for me. We were sixth, then we become third and then second. And this is step by step.
“And of course we’re here to win, so hopefully we can make it faster. But we have to be realistic. And yes, I had many offers, but as I said before, it had to be the right offer worth me moving away from my perfect life.”
Besiktas, who have won the Turkish Super Lig title 16 times, are currently sixth in the standings. They have been without a permanent head coach since Giovanni van Bronckhorst left in November.
“You need to feel that heartbeat racing again, because (you ask) ‘do you have the energy?’ and the project that the President and the board have been talking to me about it was the right thing I needed now,” he added.
“I’ve been following United (since I left) and it’s difficult when it goes down. You need to just turn the boat and hopefully we can turn the boat quickly here.”
Solskjaer praised the club’s young talent like Semih Kilicsoy (19-years-old) and Mustafa Hekimoglu (17). “A little bit unfair to compare with Erling Haaland,” he added.
“Because Haaland is one of the best strikers in the world, but we will help them to become as good as they can get.”
Solskjaer’s side visit Mourinho’s Fenerbahce in May in the Super Lig. Besiktas are 28th in the Europa League standings, a point off the play-off places, with two games left to play in the league phase.

Argentine footballer, Rodrigo Garro charged with manslaughter after fatal crash incident
Argentine midfielder Rodrigo Garro was charged on Sunday with involuntary manslaughter following a crash that killed a motorcyclist in his hometown of General Pico in Argentina’s La Pampa province.
The 30-year-old victim, Nicolas Chiaraviglio, died at the scene after his motorcycle was struck by a pickup truck early on Saturday morning.
Garro’s lawyer, David Divan, said his client was “deeply shocked” and willing to cooperate with the investigation.
After leaving the courthouse in General Pico, the lawyer emphasized Garro’s immediate efforts to assist the victim, and said he will not be detained while awaiting trial.
Garro, who plays for Brazil’s Corinthians, plans to return to Brazil, Divan said.
Corinthians expressed solidarity with Chiaraviglio’s family in a statement released on Saturday and committed to cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

Pele’s old club Santos seals return to the top flight a year after relegation
Santos won promotion back to Brazil’s Serie A with a 2-0 win over Coritiba on Monday as Pele’s former club secured top flight status a year after being relegated for the first time.
Santos, who celebrated their 112th anniversary earlier this year, were relegated in December when they lost 2-1 to Fortaleza in the final round of fixtures.
However, goals first-half from Wendel and Romulo Otero on Monday ensured they bounced straight back up and took them to within touching distance of the Serie B title.
“The joy of making history. A source of honour and joy,” Brazilian forward Guilherme told ge.globo.
“Truly, a difficult year. The fans deserve it too much, every member of staff at the centre, the board of directors. I’m at a loss for words.”
Late Brazilian great Pele helped Santos become one of the most famous clubs in world football, with the coastal city side enjoying a golden era in the 1950s and 1960s that saw them win 10 state and six Brazilian league titles.
In addition to Pele, Santos have produced a host of elite players such as Neymar, former AC Milan forward Robinho and Real Mardrid’s Rodrygo.
“It was the most difficult year in the history of this club,” midfielder Joao Schmidt said. “A lot of courage … It’s almost mission accomplished, we’re looking for the title.”
Santos have a five-point lead in Serie B with two games to go

Nigeria’s Bright Osayi-Samuel unpunished challenge leads to Mourinho suspension and fine
Fenerbahce coach Jose Mourinho has been suspended for one match and fined by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) for criticising the performance of the Video Assistant Referee after a 3-2 Super Lig win at Trabzonspor.
Trabzonspor were awarded two penalties in the second half following VAR interventions and with the scores level at 2-2 Mourinho was incensed when a challenge on Bright Osayi-Samuel went unpunished.
The Portuguese coach suggested VAR official Atilla Karaoglan had missed the incident, adding that the Turkish league “smells bad” and that international fans had no reason to watch the league.
The TFF said in a statement that Mourinho’s comments were “contrary to sportsmanship, sports ethics or fair-play understanding”.
The governing body added Mourinho’s remarks were “intended to damage the reputation of the TFF, to lower the value of Turkish football, to overshadow or discredit the impartiality of referees and other competition officials”.
Mourinho was fined 600,000 Turkish lira ($18,000) for unsportsmanlike behaviour and 58,500 for his conduct towards the opposing team’s fans.
Fenerbahce Vice President Acun Ilicali was also fined for criticising the refereeing in a statement on the club’s website.
