Algeria overtakes struggling Nigeria in FIFA rankings
The Algerian national team has capitalised on Nigeria’s struggles for form and consistency. Algeria has risen to 4th place in Africa, overtaking Nigeria, which endured a dismal international break.
The Super Eagles drew 1-1 with Benin and suffered a 2-1 defeat against Rwanda, resulting in a significant loss of 21.06 points.
This drop saw Nigeria plummet from 36th to 44th in the global rankings, sliding into 5th place in Africa.
Meanwhile, Algeria avoided a similar fate by securing a 5-1 win against Liberia and a goalless draw with Equatorial Guinea, maintaining their 36th spot globally despite a slight points reduction.
The Fennecs have now solidified their place among Africa’s elite.

Possibly owing to their 2-1 home loss to lower-ranked Rwanda on the last matchday of the Africa Cup of Nations, the Super Eagles have tumbled eight steps down the ladder in the latest global ranking released by FIFA this Thursday.
Before the current ranking of 44, the Super Eagles were 36th when they crumbled at home to the then-ranked 124th Rwanda.
Conversely, the unexpected away win by Rwanda has raised the country’s global ranking to 124th.
Nigeria Super Eagles are now 36th in the World ranking, a rise of three steps over their previous position. That is the outcome of the latest ranking released Thursday by FIFA.
In so doing, the Super Eagles also rose in continental ranking as they are now number four after Morocco, Senegal and Egypt.
Victories over Benin Republic and Libya in their first leg matches of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers as well as a valuable point obtained in their away game with Rwanda contributed to their rise.
Cote d’ivoire have overtaken the Nigeria Super Eagles in the current ranking released by FIFA on Thursday morning. Nigeria dropped from 38 to 39th position and ranks fifth position. There has been a steady drop in the team’s ranking lately following dismal post Afcon 2023 performances.
Most appalling is the fact that the team has not won any World Cup qualifying match since their 2-0 defeat of Liberia on 13 November 2021.
They have since gone seven matches without winning any. In contrast, Morocco continues to hold on tenaciously to the first position in the continent.
Overall, Argentina bounced into the first position in the world after their last weekend’s triumph in the Copa America. Newly crowned European champions Spain rose to third position.
