Why Ronaldo sacked his super-agent, Mendes
Cristiano Ronaldo has began a new business life with another agent after discarding his long time agent, Jorge Mendes who was glarringly absent in all the ceremonies that attended Ronaldo’s move to Saudi Arabia.
The split in the relationship, it was gathered froom UK’s Daily Mail, was primarily caused by Mendes failure to secure Ronaldo a move to either Chelsea or Bayern Munich when the star player’s was having a turbulent time at Manchester United.
Both Chelsea and Munich were alarmed that Ronaldo missed the start of pre-season training. It was also gathered that Mendes was opposed to the controversial interview the player had with Piers Morgan.
That interview was also the last straw that led to his exit from Manchester United.
Another report in Spanish outlet, El Mundo reveals Ronaldo had issued Mendes with an ultimatum last summer as the star desperately sought a move away from United following the club’s failure to secure Champions League football.
Mendes had touted Ronaldo to several clubs during the transfer window, with Bayern and Chelsea the clubs most prominently linked with a move for the star, in part due to his commercial appeal.
Daily Mail reports that the new Chelsea owner, Todd Boehly was keen at bringing in Ronaldo, but the then manager, Thomas Tuchel was believed to have had reservations.
Oliver Kahn, the CEO of German champions Bayern Munich, had also admitted the club had internally discussed the prospect of signing Ronaldo, before claiming he did not ‘fit our philosophy’.
It is claimed officials from the clubs called Mendes directly to inform the agent they were no longer willing to pursue a deal.
Ronaldo had explained during his interview with Morgan that his late return for pre-season training had been due to his daughter’s illness.
His daughter’s sickness came just three months after the tragic death of his baby son.
Ronaldo ultimately stayed with United and with Mendes in the build-up to the World Cup in Qatar, before both relationships collapsed after his interview with Morgan.
United terminated Ronaldo’s contract after he criticised the club’s leadership, including manager Erik ten Hag.
Mendes reportedly attempted to secure Ronaldo a move to Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund following his exit from United.
The agent had previously contacted Sir Alex Ferguson to help bring Ronaldo back to United after the star had reportedly informed Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri of his intent to leave the Italian side without having a move lined up.
The pair’s split came after a move to a Champions League side failed to materialise.
‘What broke was not a simple contract, as Mendes never asked his players to sign it, what broke was much more: a paternal, family and even business relationship,’ El Mundo reported.
‘The agent is godfather of one of the player’s children and Ronaldo’s mother [Dona Dolores] has often shown the adoration she had for Jorge Mendes.’
The split had followed Mendes increasingly losing influence over Ronaldo. The Portuguese star is said to have turned towards his partner ‘Georgina Rodríguez and those around him’.
Ronaldo’s personal manager and close friend Regufe ultimately brokered his stunning £175m-a-year move to Al-Nassr.
Regufe, whose presence during the World Cup had been questioned by Portuguese team-mates, flanked the five-time Ballon d’Or winner on his arrival in Saudi Arabia earlier this month.

Lionel Messi set to hang boots
Inter Miami will be the last club Argentina captain Lionel Messi plays for, the 36-year-old forward said on Wednesday, adding he feels “a little bit scared” at the thought of the day he decides to retire.
Messi, a World Cup winner with Argentina in 2022, has a contract with the Major League Soccer side until 2025 following his arrival last summer after a spell with French champions Paris St Germain.
“Inter Miami will be my last club. I love playing football. I enjoy everything even more because I am aware that there is less and less left,” Messi told ESPN.
“I’m not ready to leave football. I’ve done this all my life, I love playing football, I enjoy training, the day-to-day, the matches… And yes, there’s always a little bit of fear that it’s all over.”
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi is preparing with his national team to defend their Copa America title, with the tournament kicking off on June 20 in the United States.
Argentina will take on Canada in the opening match before facing Group A rivals Chile on June 25 and Peru four days later.
