UPSET GALORE AT WIMBLEDON! 15-YEAR OLD SENDS WILLIAMS OUT; TOP SEED OSAKA IS OUSTED IN ROUND 1

Second seed Naomi Osaka was the major casualty on the first day of Wimbledon as the women’s second seed crashed out to Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva.
Osaka came into the Championships with the knowledge that a
third Grand Slam title in 12 months would put her back at the top of the world
rankings.
The Japanese star was instead faced with the potential of a short stay at the All England Club after losing the opening set to Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva on a tie-break on Centre Court.
Putintseva, the world number 39, then broke Osaka at the start of the second set as the prospect of an upset grew.
Osaka threatened to immediately break back, only for Putintseva to old on before the 24-year-old secured a double break advantage.
She completed a 7-6, 6-2 victory to reach the second round for the fourth time in her career as Osaka made an early departure.
Teenage American qualifier Cori Gauff delivered one of the
biggest stories of the day as she eliminated five-time champion Venus Williams.
The 15-year-old Gauff had already become the youngest player to qualify for the main Wimbledon draw since the Open era began in 1968.
She exceeded expectations further by winning her first Grand Slam singles match 6-4, 6-4 against Williams, winner of four Grand Slam titles before her opponent had been born.
Romania’s Simona Halep had no such problems as she cruised through her opening match on Court One featuring a new roof for the tournament.
Halep recorded a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich to progress.
Defending men’s champion Novak Djokovic advanced in straight sets against Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber.
The opening match of the tournament saw the Serbian star record a 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 win as Djokovic begins his pursuit of a fifth Wimbledon title.
His task potentially became easier as Germany’s Alexander Zverev, the tournament sixth seed, suffered a shock defeat.
Zverev won the opening set against Jiří Veselý, but the Czech qualifier stormed back to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5.
The seventh seed fell to a five set 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 defeat to Italy’s Thomas Fabbiano.
Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka earned a second round spot as the three-time Grand Slam winner triumphed 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 against Belgium’s Ruben Bemelmans.

Five players from the United States are ranked in the Women’s Tennis Association’s top 15 for the first time in two decades, the USTA said on Monday.
World number two Coco Gauff led the American charge followed by sixth-ranked Jessica Pegula and Danielle Collins, who climbed two spots to ninth on the list amid a remarkable farewell season.
Madison Keys was ranked 14th while Emma Navarro hopped two spots to a career-high 15th after reaching her first major quarter-final at Wimbledon.
The last time five American women featured in the top 15 was May 24, 2004, when Lindsay Davenport was fourth in the world

Seven-times Grand Slam champion Venus Williams and Australian soccer player Mary Fowler are among nine athletes to get a Barbie doll in their likeness as toy maker Mattel seeks to shine a light on women sports role models ahead of the Paris Olympics.
Mattel unveiled the dolls on Wednesday, each with their bespoke accessories. Fowler’s wears gloves and holds a football while Williams’ doll, dressed in an all white tennis dress and visor as well as wearing earrings, comes with a miniature racket.
The former world number one said she hoped to motivate young girls into sports with the doll.
“I literally can’t imagine my life without sports and without the game,” Williams said in a video, in which she held the doll.
“I want other young girls to have that invaluable experience of playing a sport and what it teaches you and what you learn and what you take from it, not just that moment (but) for the rest of your life… I think it’s so important for girls to be in sports.”
Other sports figures to have a doll in their likeness include French boxer Estelle Mossely, Polish sprinter Ewa Swoboda, Spanish doctor and paratriathlon athlete Susana Rodriguez, Italian former swimmer Federica Pellegrini, Canadian soccer player Christine Sinclair as well as Mexican and Brazilian gymnasts, Alexa Moreno and Rebeca Andrade.
The dolls, unveiled as Barbie turns 65 this year, “(recognise) the impact of sport in fostering self-confidence and ambition among the next generation”, Krista Berger, senior vice president of Barbie and Mattel’s Global Head of Dolls, said.
“By shining a light on these inspirational athletes and their stories, we hope to champion the belief that every young girl deserves the opportunity to pursue her passions and turn her dreams into reality,” she said in a statement.

Tennis great Serena Williams will host the 2024 ESPYs in July, ESPN announced on Tuesday.
The 23-times Grand Slam champion, who retired after the 2022 U.S. Open and is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, will take the stage July 11 at The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
“This is a dream come true for me, and something I’ve wanted to do for as long as I can remember,” Williams, 42, said in an ESPN news release.
“It has been a sensational year for sports and an unprecedented one for female athletes. I can’t wait to celebrate everyone on-stage in July.”
The ESPYs, which are co-produced by ESPN and Full Day Productions, commemorate the past year in sports by recognizing major athletic achievements, reliving unforgettable moments, and saluting the leading performers and performances.
